Mudras are the position of our fingers such that it influences the energies and the mood of your body. Our physical body is made of 5 elements – Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Aakash (the small intercellular spaces in the human body also known as Ether). When these elements are not in balance, our immunity system gets disrupted and hence causes diseases.
The Five Fingers for the Five Elements are
The Deficiencies or imbalance in any of these elements can be made up by these fingers in different positions. For example, a mental ailment can be recovered by joining the tip of the thumb and index finger (known as Chin Mudra). The mudras generate electromagnetic currents within the body which thus balances the various elements and restores health. Some of the common mudras are:
1. Chin Mudra
This mudra increases concentration sharpens your memory and enhances creativity. Perhaps the most commonly used mudra by yogis and meditators, it symbolizes the unity of air and fire as well as the universe and individual consciousness.
Steps to do this Mudra: Keep your palms facing upwards resting on both the legs and join the thumb and the index fingers.
2. Shoonya Mudra
The Shoonya Mudra brings relief to diseases and pains relating to the ear such as earaches and ringing noises within.
Steps to do this Mudra: Bend the middle finger such that its tip rests on the base of the thumb. Bend the thumb until it gently presses the middle finger. The rest of the fingers and the palm should face the sky. Hold this mudra for 45 minutes or 3 sessions of 15 minutes each.
3. Prana Mudra
The Prana Mudra helps to activate and energize our body. It creates a storage house of energy so that we can face our challenges of life.
Steps to do this Mudra: Join the tip of the ring and little fingers with the thumb. The other two fingers and the palm should face the sky.
4. Surya Mudra
The Surya Mudra helps to lose your body weight. Performing this mudra can increase in resolving digestive problems.
Steps to do this Mudra: Gently place the tip of the ring finger on the base of the thumb and bend the thumb finger towards the middle of the ring finger. Hold on to this Mudra for 30 minutes or 2 sessions of 15 minutes each.
5. Prithvi Mudra
The Prithvi Mudra helps to increase the strength and endurance of our body, thus makes the body sturdy. It also prevents hair loss and weight loss.
Steps to do this Mudra: Join the tip of the ring finger and the thumb. Hold on to this mudra for 30 to 45 minutes a day (may do it in 2 or 3 sessions).
