Affirmations are like sowing a seed in the ground – if the land is fertile, they will germinate and grow to give a lovely yield; if they fall on a land which is partly dry – the seeds will germinate, but will perish in a little while; furthermore, if the seeds fall on rocks the seed will not germinate at all. This article throws light on the magic of affirmations in our life.
Another way to put the above analogy is that the affirmation is like a nail, the mental repetition of it is like hammering it in the wall, and mind is like a wall, if the wall is of iron, the nail will not go in, it will bend, but not go in, which means that the mind does not believe in the affirmation or rather lacks the attitude and understanding; the other wall is like the mud wall, in which the nail will go in one strike, which suggests that the mind is extremely receptive or open, and readily comprehends the hidden truth in the said affirmation.
So the moment he says to himself, he becomes one with the truth and his whole being acknowledges it and the truth becomes a part of his being. The third kind of wall is the most common, the cement and mortar wall, where the nail will go in slowly after repeated hammerings. Here the mind is half believing and half skeptical, but with faith and understanding if the person keeps on affirming, gradually, bit-by-bit the nail of truth will be certainly lodged in his consciousness. It is what we suggest to the mind that makes life what it is.
Most of us have imposed limitations on our minds which work like shackles or like brakes on a moving vehicle and hence we are unable to achieve which otherwise we could if we remove the self-imposed mental barriers. If there is a devil in this world it is the word called ‘CAN’T.’ One must never affirm negative thoughts to the mind which will forever condition it from trying.
Once an elephant was tied to a very thin rope and could easily have broken free, but wasn’t trying. The onlooker asked the owner for the reason: the owner informed that as a young calf the elephant was tied with the same rope, but back then it was too thick for it to break free, he tried and tried and failed – now his mind is conditioned that he cannot, so he doesn’t even try. That is the case with many who refuse to try after one or two failures.
The best time to sow the seeds for success is in the time of failures. It is said Edison failed 999 times to make a bulb and then later he said, that I learned 999 ways of how not to make a bulb. This is the indefatigable attitude that we need to cultivate in our character.
A mind is the repository of infinite potentials and power, but we do not really know of our potential which is lying dormant, because of no use. It is said if we tie one of our hands behind our back, for several months, and do not use it, it will atrophy and wither, in the state of no use, it will become very lean. Exactly the case with our mind, because it is not being stretched towards its infinite potential, it becomes atrophied.
People are known to have healed themselves through affirmations, but affirmations without faith, lack power, so a half believing affirmation will have little or no effect.
One can really work his way to health and success through affirmations, and that is just the beginning, one can go even beyond and realize oneself as the infinite cosmic consciousness. Man’s true nature is infinite, as a soul, one is part of the infinite consciousness, but since the soul has been slumbering in the matter for an unknown number of incarnation, it has become conditioned to thinking itself as the limited body. It is like a bird in the cage. That lost memory of its inherent nature is lying dormant in its memory. By repeated affirmations, one can uncover the sleeping memory (Smriti) of its forgotten divine heritage of kinship with all life and the cosmos. All that is needed is perseverance, faith, and belief.
